Dry Needling for Pain Relief and Better Movement

Do I offer dry needling?

Yes I do.  I spent a year and half in a post graduate sports medicine acupuncture program learning dry needling, motor point and myofascial release.  I completed an advanced cadaver dissection class, needling muscles to understand needle placement and depth for maximum pain relief.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a targeted therapy that uses acupuncture needles to address areas of muscular tension known as trigger points.  Since acupuncture needles are solid not hollow like hypodermic needles (which inject substances) the technique is called dry needling.

Dry needling is targeting trigger points.

What are trigger points?

  • Areas in muscles that feel hard, knotty, ropey or tender to the touch.

  • Can restrict movement

  • Create pain patterns that refer to other parts of the body

  • Can cause tingling, numbness

Needling into these specific areas can:

  • Helps a muscle to learn how to relax

  • Improve range of motion by loosening fascia

  • Reduces pain

  • Decrease localized inflammation and improve blood flow into the muscle.

How Dry Needling Works?

Many people describe the sensation as a quick pressure or twitch response as the muscle releases. This reaction is a sign the trigger point has been activated and the muscle is resetting, allowing it to soften and function more freely.

Dry needling encourages the body to:

• Increase blood flow to the treated area

• Calm overactive nerve signals

• Reduce local inflammation

• Support natural tissue repair

These responses from dry needling become powerful tools for both acute and chronic conditions.

Why Choose Me for Dry Needling?

As a trained and licensed acupuncturist, I offer dry needling as a highly effective clinical technique to help reduce muscle dysfunction, release tension, and support your body’s natural healing process.

My unique advantage is the ability to seamlessly integrate both dry needling and traditional acupuncture approaches. While dry needling powerfully addresses acute and chronic muscle pain from a Western neuro-muscular perspective, we can also integrate the systemic, anti-inflammatory, and balancing effects of traditional acupuncture to enhance your overall recovery and well-being.

You get the best of both worlds.

My initial training of 3600 hours (versus 200 hours for physical therapist or chiropractors) combines the precision of modern needling techniques with the holistic perspective of traditional acupuncture. This dual approach allows me to treat not just the painful area, butthe underlying patterns contributing to your discomfort.

You can expect:

• A customized treatment plan based on your body’s specific needs

• Gentle, skilled needle technique.

• Clear communication so you always know what to expect

• Integration with acupuncture, manual therapy, or corrective exercises (when appropriate)

Whether you’re an athlete seeking better performance, someone managing work-related tension, or simply looking to move and feel better, my goal is to help you reach a higher level of comfort and function.

What Conditions Can Dry Needling Help With?

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • Lower-back discomfort

  • Hip and gluteal tightness

  • Jaw or facial muscle tension

  • Arm, wrist, or hand overuse patterns

  • Leg and calf tightness

Layering of needling techniques gives outstanding pain relief.  When I treat, every acupuncture session for pain management includes:

  • Trigger point release

  • Motor point release - the location where the motor nerve goes into muscle.  Needling the tissue around the motor point works like magic with trigger point

  • Distall points according to Chinese medicine.  These points often follow myofascial pathways and can release myofascial tissue being impacted by the original pain location.

  • Ear needles

  • Traditional acupuncture point selection

  • Moxa

  • Cupping

  • Gua sha
